Two blocks of dirt - $27million, thank you very much

A block of land at Main Beach and a house at Byron Bay have sold for combined $27 million.

The ocean front site at Main Beach bought almost $12 million when it went under the auctioneer’s hammer yesterday.

An unidentified buyer picked up the 882sqm vacant lot for $11.5 million at one of the most anticipated auctions of the year.

The sellers, Cleo and Maxwell Conrad, made a $6.25 million profit after buying the land in 2002 for $5.3 million. It’s the first beachfront sale in the exclusive suburb sinc3 January 2004 , when humble tow storey beach shack sold for $13 million.

At Wategos Beach in Byron Bay, the $15 million sale for Wategos House almost doubled the previous record of $7.8 million, paid by Melbourne businessman Bob Watson for a Belongil property earlier this year.

Little known multi millionaire developer Danny Goldberg is believed to have paid in excess of $10,000 a square metre fo the mansion, which cost up to $16,000 a week to rent during peak holiday season and from which whales can be seen migrating from the expansive backyard.

The Vaucluse based businessman and his family regularly holiday at the hidden Cape Byron property.

The colonial style house was last sold in 2000, when publishing executive Stephen Bush paid $2.09 million for the two storey home on 1500sqm.

The six bedroom home was at the centre of bidding war last month between Mr Goldberg and a Cold Coast buyer.
